2nd day – Saturday 10th September : Cruise Porto - Regua
Boarding ship at 08:00 from Cais do Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto)
Breakfast will be served on the ship. We will make our way to Regua and along the way will be able to see the famous Douro Valley vineyards (World Heritage) and ascend two locks at Crestuma and Carrapatelo. The scenery during the trip is unforgettable and there will be many photo-opportunities of the marvellous landscape coloured with the blue of the river and the sky, contrasted by the green and brown of the vineyards.
An aperitif of Port Wine and lunch will also be served on board the ship:
At 14:45 We will arrive at Cais da Régua and disembark.
At 15.15 we will board the bus that takes us to the historical city of Vila Real where we will check into the Hotel Mira Corgo.
The city of Vila Real was founded in 1289 by King Dinis of Portugal. During the Middle Ages the city hosted more members of royalty than any other city (except for Lisbon) which earned it the name “Royal City,” translated to Vila Real in Portuguese. The famous family coat of arms, a sword embedded in a wreath of zambujeir (wild olive branches), still shines proudly on older homes in the city today. These stately once-royal residences line the main streets of the city, many adorned with Manueline-style windows and wrought-iron balconies. The most famous royal residence in the area is the Palácio de Mateus, used as a holiday home for the Portuguese royal family during the 6th and 7th centuries.
At 17.00 we will visit the historical centre of Vila Real. Avenida Carvalho Araújo, bordered by traditional cobbled pavements, runs across the city, leading at one end to the 19th century Town Hall building. Further along is the Gothic Cathedral and, opposite, a 16th century house with Manueline windows which houses the Tourist Office. As we continue our stroll between Avenida Carvalho Araújo and the waterfront avenue, amid stately houses and shopping streets, you will get to the liveliest and most typical part of Vila Real. This is where the Misericórdia Church and the Clérigos Church are to be found, the latter a masterpiece by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. Take a moment to admire the balconies decorated with iron railings and the granite framed windows which form a gallery of genuinely Portuguese civic architecture.
At 20.00 we will have dinner at the hotel.

3rd day – 11th September : Wine harvesting in the Douro Valley
09:00 : Breakfast
After breakfast our bus will take us to the “Quinta de Avessada” (https://enotecadouro.com/). The Quinta is located on one of the highest points of the Douro Valley at just over 600-meters. We will be greeted with a smile and a glass of Muscatel wine: the main grape of the area. accompamied by typical music played on a concertina.
Visit vineyards typical of the Douro Valley.
We have to work for our lunch! So we proceed to the vineyards and begin to harvest the grapes and transport them to the winery to the accompaniment of traditional concertina music and songs of the Douro region.
At 12:30 we will have a wine tasting attended by wine specialists of the Quinta, with aperitif service.
At 13:00 a traditional lunch Duriense will be served, with delicious food and free-flowing wine coffee and aguardente (strong digestif).
At 14.30 anyone can take part in the crushing of the grapes to the rhythm of the songs – you just need to roll up your trousers or dresses! This is a real fun event!
Our wonderful day at Quinta da Avessada ends 16.00 and we will return to our hotel in Vila Real tired but in very high spirits!
19.30 Dinner in Hotel Mira Corgo in Vila Real.

4th Day 12th September: End of Programme
